New PRs and a few top-10 finishes were the highlights of the day as the Swansea High School girls track team competed in the Lexington High School Invitational on March 29.
In the individual relays, sophomore Danae McNeal was crowned as the 100m hurdles champion with a time of 16.73 seconds. A.C. Flora’s Nadia Whetstone (17.98) and Lexington’s Michela Brummerloh (18.03) finished second and third, respectively. McNeal’s stellar 100m hurdles effort was a new PR. McNeal also competed in the 400m hurdles, where she set a new PR with a 1:17.12 time, to place fifth. In the 400m dash, Kelsha Sloan earned points for the Tigers with a time of 1:08.29 and a ninth place finish. Sloan’s time was also a new PR.
The Lady Tigers 4x100m relay team – Jamie Beard, Zhydeazha Edmond, Zhuri Gillings and Danae McNeal, set a SR with a time of 53.38 seconds to finish fifth. Aiken High School won the race posting a time of 49.27 seconds. In the 4x400m relay which included Beard, Gillings, McNeal and Sloan, the Lady Tigers also earned a fifth-place mark and SR with their time of 4:44.64.
In the field events, Danae McNeal posted a 17-01.00 mark to win the long jump. Aiken’s Destiny Williams (16.06.00) and A.C. Flora’s Jaymie Lindo (16.04.00) placed second and third, respectively. McNeal’s 17-01.00 mark moves her to second place in AAA for the event.
“Our team has been working really hard at practice and their efforts are really starting to show now,” said head track and field coach Isaiah Perrin. “I’m really pleased with the way our team performed at the meet.”
Swansea will return to the track on Monday, April 3 when they compete at the Lexington County High School Championship at Lexington High School.
