Junior quarterback Keenan Coats led the Swansea Tigers to a 27-13 win over Battery Creek last Friday in the season opener in Beaufort, S.C. For the game, Coats had 182 total passing yards with two touchdowns. He also ran for 66 yards total, which included another score for the Tigers.
Battery Creek took a 6-0 lead after missing a two-point conversion with 10:57 left in the first quarter. Swansea would score twice as linebacker Greg Williams put the Tigers in scoring position after he intercepted the ball and ran it 28 yards to give Swansea possession at the Dolphins’ 9-yard line. The Tigers led 13-6 after a 4-yard touchdown by senior running back Kendall Brooks.
Swansea continued to apply pressure on Battery Creek as Coats ran the ball 20 yards for another touchdown to put the Tigers up 20-6. The Dolphins would not recover, but were able to get on the board again at the 1:12 mark in the fourth quarter to make the final score 27-13.
As a team, Swansea rushed 23 times for a total of 150 yards, 84 of which came on three carries. Defensively, the Tigers held Battery Creek to six plays that went for 10 yards or more. The Dolphins never had a play resulting in 20 yards or more.
Swansea will host its first home game of the season on Friday as Richland Northeast High School makes the trip across town. This is the first game of the season for the Cavaliers. Kickoff at The Swamp is at 7:30 p.m.
