Swansea was up 21-20 in the fourth quarter, but Richland Northeast outscored the Tigers 14-0 in the final seven minutes and held off any hopes of a comeback to claim a 35-21 victory on Friday night at Swansea.
The Tigers (1-1) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after senior running back Kendall Brooks scored with 5:02 to go in the first quarter. The Cavs answered on the other end as Twontae Wallace’s 13-yard touchdown run put RNE on top 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The Tigers kept their momentum going into the second quarter as junior quarterback Keenan Coats connected with sophomore wide receiver Michael Jones for an 11-yard pass for a touchdown. Brooks came up big for Swansea as he got the two-point conversion to give the Tigers a 14-7 lead with under a minute to go before halftime. The defense held tough for Swansea as they kept RNE scoreless in the second quarter.
RNE tied the game 14-14 in the third quarter. Numerous penalties got the best of both teams during the fourth quarter. Swansea regained the lead with seven minutes left in the game to make the score 21-20, but the Cavs scored 14 unanswered points to close out the game and seal the win.
