Swansea High School took down the Strom Thurmond Rebels, 36-35, to pick up its first region win of the season in a thriller that came down to the final seconds on Friday night.
Junior quarterback Keenan Coates connected with junior Devin White for a 20-yard touchdown pass with 16 seconds left in the game to pull the Tigers within one. Swansea elected to go for two after a roughing the kicker penalty moved the ball to the one-yard line. Senior running back Kendall Brooks ran around the left side to complete the 2-point conversion that sealed the victory for the Tigers.
The win moves the Tigers to 1-1 in region play and 2-5 overall. Swansea is currently in a four-way tie for second place in the Class 3A Region V standings with Brookland-Cayce, Strom Thurmond and Pelion. Gilbert is number one, respectively. Edisto rounds out the rest of the standings.
Swansea will host Pelion this Friday at Doug Bennett Stadium in Swansea, S.C. This game is designated as the “Pink Out” game to raise awareness for breast cancer. Wear your pink and come out and support your Tigers.
